Sunshine and tanlines

The pictures below don't do yesterday's ride justice. It was gorgeous. Within about 35 minutes, my arm warmers were stuff into my pockets. Nothing but summer kit and sunshine for the next three hours.

One interesting note about yesterday's ride: Since it's a rest week, I just had a meandering 3 hours on the plan. No tempo, speed or HR numbers in mind - just going for a ride. But that 3 hours covered more mileage than the previous week's Tuesday ride, which did actually have numbers attached to it.

Could it be the bike? Could it be the weather or the route? More likely, I just needed a couple of days off. All is well now, though. And the summer tanlines are forming nicely.

I've often wondered about using numbers for easy rides. When I was training, I thought anyone who set a limit on HR was nuts. But after looking back, I was probably overtrained most of the time due to not going easy enough on easy rides or hard enough on hard rides.

If I ever get back into it, I imagine I'd either try to convince group ride buddies to take it super easy, or just go solo allowing me to keep the exertion level down.

It's easy, Mike: Don't go on a group ride if you have to ride really easy.

Example: I really, really want to ride with the bunch on Sunday. But it's a rest week, and I guarandamntee that ride won't be easy.

So your second option will be the one, most likely: go solo.
