Half-formed thoughts

Because you don't want to hear about freelance projects, vacuuming and cruise intervals:
  • When you lose weight, does your stomach shrink? I've lost a few pounds — nothing crazy, by any means — bu my appetite is way down, even after a four-plus-hour ride. Sandwich, some fruit and a glass of water and I'm good. Maybe it's due to smaller portion sizes to begin with (which is how I lost weight, mostly), but it takes a lot less to fill me up. That's probably not a bad thing.
  • I'm down to one can of soda per week. It's usually a Mountain Dew, because that's what is on the shelf in the garage. I miss it much less than I thought I would. Could I go all the way off soda? Probably, but why? It's damn tasty. Everything in moderation.
  • I haven't renewed my racing license yet. I should do that, given the first week is less than a couple weeks away. The delay is partly tied to losing weight — I have very, very few pairs of bibs that fit now. Riding in bad shorts sucks, and riding in great shorts that don't fit isn't much better. I've been trying to rebuild the cycling drawer.
  • For you writing types: Is there a limit to quality words per day? As in, when you hit a certain word limit, do your thoughts just become total crap, forcing you to spend a lot of time with the "delete" key, staring off into space? Between this blog, VeloGear, GamJams Midwest and other freelance projects, I often wonder if I'll run out of words. I guess, in a way, that's like a baseball player believing that bats only have a certain amount of hits in them before they go bad. (In my case, by the way, bats had about four hits in them before they went bad.)
  • There's been a lot of anticipatory chattering about the Twin Bing Classic on April 10. While there are a few big hills on the course, it's not a killer loop. And it's surely not an epic race so much as it is the first race. Is everybody all worked up because they're ready to go, or because it's actually a big deal? Seems to me it's a bit early in the year to be a really big deal. That said, I rode one lap, pulled off my race number and went for a nice ride last year. What do I know?
Time to get things done. I'll leave you with my thoughts.

As far as weight loss, or anything else that might happen to a persons body, there probably is a scientific explanation to it. My first thought was hormones such as this http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/09/100909073911.htm. A shrinking stomach? I've never heard of that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stomach I've heard of stomach reduction, stapling.

Good post, Bryan.

Your stomach is elastic, it expands and contracts based on how much you're putting into it. Part of the issue with stomach stapling is that if you don't change your lifestyle(i.e. stop eating so damn much) your stomach will stretch back out and nothing will change.

marc - I'm fairly certain I didn't have my stomach stapled. Seems like something I'd remember.

jonathan - thanks kindly.

chris - you're still not a doctor, no matter what you say.

Dude, tell me what you think of the Twin Bing course at lap 3, (if you make it that far). :). It's the best road race course you'll see all year.

Sure it's the best course, but is it the best race? I think not. And just because it's a nice course doesn't mean it's a really big deal.

Remember, though: I was with you the entire time two years ago. In fact, I recall you being surprised to see me.

Of course, that means nothing when we're talking about this year, but I've been there before. It's not that special.

Yeah but I'll bet I have more of a medical background then you do. And I know someone who had their stomach stapled.

Think so? I do have a degree in physical education, which included coursework on anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, athletic training and some other stuff that I don't remember right now.

I have the roughly 4 years of biology related experience in both the human and animal world, to include schooling and on the job experience. Plus a solid 4 years of poor spending habits resulting in a a week of very little eating followed by a week of very good eating. I've had that first meal after a week of extreme hunger where you have a hard time finding room for a burger and fries, and three days of good eating later you're looking for another burger to fill you up. And I have a relative who had their stomach stapled, didn't change their eating habits and as a result probably weighs more now then they did before the surgery. Trust me on this one, stomachs are elastic and they do shrink and expand.

Also, from the wikipedia article; "In adult humans, the stomach has a relaxed, near empty volume of about 45 ml. Because it is a distensible organ, it normally expands to hold about 1 litre of food,[4] but can hold as much as 2-3 litres. The stomach of a newborn human baby will only be able to retain about 30ml."
