I woke up this morning to the sound of rain. It hasn't really let up. It's going to be like this for a while. And if I didn't have to go to work at some point soon, I'd need to get a workout in.
There are two options: outside in ... that (currently 36 and raining) or the trainer. In all reality, I want nothing to do with the trainer right now. But outside ... yuck.
When answering the following question, throw "training benefit" out the door. You're just going for a steady ride, and I want to know solely of the "experience" only.
You need to get in two hours today. What's it going to be: trainer or outside (again, 36 and raining)?
My stance: Actually, I think I'd rather go outside. I have no idea why, considering the last time I was outside in those conditions I was absolutely miserable.
Your stance: Go!

Go outside. I've already been and it's not too bad. I would like to have gone for 2 hours, but I just had to settle for the 40 minute commute into work. The trainer will just bore you to death.
Just hope drivers out there are paying more attention than usual. There were a couple of close calls, but it's all good.
Outside with a buddy is best option, but not always doable. That way you can both suffer and at least talk about stuff that takes your mind off the conditions.
Personally, without a suffer buddy, I'd just listen to Phil and Paul tell me what's going on in the race I'm watching while pedaling to no where.
Stay inside and double your usual intake of coffee. Your increased heart rate will simulate a workout...and you'll stay dry (and maybe get extra work done).
Outside and raining...of course, I can road ride on the MTB and not have the slick wreck worries, too. Even though it doesn't get quite as nasty here, I'll go out at 15 degrees with icy rain rather than ride the trainer.
kevin - if today were a riding day, I probably would have been outside.
mike - phil and paul, to be honest, suck as suffer buddies. they completely ignore what you're saying.
mark - post-Cranksgiving, that won't be an option. damn.
mallie - I can road ride on the MTB, too. I'm sure it'll happen sooner or later.
Trainer outside. Be cold, warm, wet and tire slippage without crashing. Embrocate like a mofo and always have the wind at your back.
One hour outside and one inside.
Fenders and saran wrap yourself over the embrocation.
Set a good example to your wife and kid. Man up or is that man down in your case.
Dude, what the hell?
When it's this dark and gloomy drivers are paying less attention than usual. My vote - gravel.
Come to think of it, I say that even at 80 degrees and sunny. Probably shouldn't listen to me.
Don't forget tunes. Cheers
outside even though 40 and rainy is a lot worse than 10 and sunny
Trainer! If it was 36 and dry, then why not go outside? But...I hate cleaning the bike afterwards. Besides, as noted in previous comments, you'll always be safe from traffic on the trainer, and you're probably not likely to crash inside (increased likelihood on rollers).
Two hours sucks on a trainer, but pop in a good movie, like Rocky - one that would make you guilty sitting on the couch to watch it - and think about your attitude 3 hours later. "Damn, I'm glad I had the fortitude to do a workout. It's done now, so on to the next project."
After all,
"The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start." --John Bingham
I've followed Eddy B's advice since the mid eighties, "Never leave for a ride in the rain, there will be plenty days when you get caught in it." Too much risk of getting sick. Enjoy the day off.
P.S. I hate trainers, the most I ride one is warming up for 'cross.
